Hamptons Eating

As someone having grown up in France where (most) food is fresh and cheap, I am a hard critic on restaurants, especially in places that have the reputation of being overpriced for sub par quality. Unfortunately, in the Hamptons, there are quite a few of these places… However, some restaurants offer delicious and inventive dishes while still offering good value. In this post, I wanted to talk about a few delightful options while visiting the Hamptons (because let’s face it, your hotel is expensive enough!).

One of my very favorite restaurants is Swallow East. The concept is international-inspired small plates that can be shared for the table. I would recommend ordering about 2 plates per person and sharing everything. The food tastes amazingly fresh and made to order. I went there with my cousin and we ordered:

  • Fresh burrata (served with Watermelon salad and balsamic glaze)
  • Crispy calamari (sweet chili glaze, scallion, and peanuts)
  • Summer rolls (seasonable vegetables, basil, peanuts and sesame vinaigrette)

I know what you’re thinking… I just said to order 2 dishes per person, and we only ordered 3 for 2 people. However, we had had a late lunch and wanted to get ice-cream somewhere else so we opted for a light dinner.

As for the food quality, I know it sounds silly but all 3 were amazing! The burrata was creamy, fresh and perfectly paired with the watermelon salad. The summer rolls were light, crispy and yummy! If I had to choose a favorite or an item you absolutely shouldn’t miss, I would choose the crispy calamari. More often than not, calamari is fried, chewy and tasteless. These ones could not be further from this critique. The sauce that came with the calamari was the perfect balance between sweet and sour and the portion size was just right to be shared!

Not only is the food delicious, but the setting is also amazing. The restaurant faces the marina and Montauk Lake! Try to get a table outside where gorgeous sunset views await.

Harbor Bistro is another restaurant worth mentioning. While a bit more expensive than Swallow East, the food is just as delicious, and a bit more traditional Harbor Bistro defines themselves as “new American cuisine with classic French backbone”, and I couldn’t agree more. Harbor Bistro offers exquisite dishes that are sometimes hard to find in the U.S. such as halibut, pork tenderloin, and duck breast. They also have amazing desserts like profiteroles, sabayon, and even Nutella crème brulée. If you’re a fan of French cuisine, this place will not disappoint you! Moreover, just like Swallow East, the terrace at Harbor Bistro overlooks a marina and offers impressive sunsets; the perfect end to any beach day!

Ouiii! Indeed :) I have family that lives there year-round so they have discovered amazing spots, but it’s true that a lot of places are very overpriced and not that great.

As someone who grew up next to the Hamptons, thus knowing how over-priced and over-hyped it can be, it’s nice to know that there are quand même des bonnes adresses ! :-) Maybe I’ll take my parents to this restaurant next time I’m back on the island. Yum!
