St Michel Madeleines

Madeleines are one of the most traditional French cookies. They are most similar to sponge cakes, but are firmer in texture. They were supposedly invented in the 18th century when a young servant decided to prepare her grandmother’s recipe in order to save an official dinner from catastrophe! Indeed, the chef had gotten into a fight with the head servant, and had left the castle with the dessert that was supposed to be served that night. Baked in scallop shells, these cookies received a great deal of appreciation and were name “Madeleine” for that young servant’s name. These delicate treats became world famous thanks to Marcel Proust’s “madeleine moment” described in his book “In Search of Lost Time”.

These madeleines are individually packaged and are perfect for a small afternoon snack. They are fantastic by themselves or with a cup of tea.
